I Needed My Brain Back, So I Tried Mushrooms

I never thought I’d be the one blogging about mushrooms. Yet here we are! 🤪

Not the kind you fry up on toast (though yes, please), or the ones that come with tie-dye and trance music - I'm talking about adaptogenic mushrooms.

The ones used in traditional medicine for centuries, now being studied for their genuinely impressive benefits. Especially for women like me, navigating midlife, brain fog, hormone chaos, and just craving clarity again.

So here’s a little look into why I started taking them, how they’ve helped me feel more focused and less foggy, and why they’ve quietly become one of my favourite daily rituals - without adding another pill pot to the shelf.

👀 Curious what I use daily? See my favourite mushroom coffee here (Just click on the shop tab, then scroll down - it's easy to spot.)

The Menopause Fog Is Real

If you feel like your brain has been dipped in cotton wool, I get it.

The low mood, the forgetfulness, the lack of focus that sneaks in during perimenopause and menopause? It’s not just you being forgetful or “scatty.” It’s biology. It’s hormonal. It’s real.

For me, it wasn’t some dramatic crash - more a subtle, daily fuzziness that crept up. Like trying to write a to-do list with oven mitts on. I wasn't necessarily looking for a quick fix, but I did wanted something gentle that wouldn't leave me wired and buzzing.

That’s when I discovered adaptogens - specifically, mushrooms.

👉 If brain fog, mood dips, or that relentless tired-but-wired feeling sounds familiar, this daily ritual also helped me feel more human again!

The Magic Of Mushrooms

These aren’t some buzzy trend, they’re nature’s original stress-support system. Ancient cultures knew what they were doing - adaptogenic mushrooms help your body adapt to stress, support focus and clarity, and boost your energy without the spike-and-crash effect.

They're not loud about it. They just quietly help your system remember how to feel steady again.

Some of my favourites?

  • Lion’s Mane – For memory, clarity, and focus

  • Cordyceps – A natural energy lift, minus the crash

  • Reishi – Calms the nervous system and supports sleep

  • Chaga – Packed with antioxidants, great for inflammation

  • Turkey Tail – Gentle support for gut health and immunity

Why Midlife Women (Like Me) Love Them

Let’s talk about that mental load.

Between shifting hormones, a million tabs open in your brain, and the need to be on all the time, no wonder we feel foggy, fried, and frazzled.

As estrogen drops, our brains can feel the effects hard: anxious thinking, low energy, poor sleep, and that scattered, hard-to-pin-down mental drain.

Mushrooms have helped me clear that haze. I feel more focused. I can get my words out faster and achieve more things in the day and my brain feels a little less cluttered, a little more mine again.

🌿 Feeling the same? You don’t need to overhaul everything - sometimes the smallest shifts are the most powerful.

How I Take Them (Hint: It’s the Best Part of My Morning)

I’ve tried powders and capsules, but honestly? What stuck was coffee.

Every morning I make a warm cup of mushroom coffee. It tastes great (and actually like coffee, not mushroom soup!) and gives me that comforting coffee making ritual I love, whilst quietly supporting my brain and body as I get on with the day. No extra steps. No forcing myself to take another thing. Just me, my mug, and a little boost.

The Blend I Use (and Why I Trust It)

My go-to is the Organic Mushroom Coffee from LiveGood. It blends Lion’s Mane, Cordyceps, and Chaga with smooth, organic coffee - and it’s genuinely delicious. Plus, I love this brand for their clean ingredients, fair pricing, and the fact that they don’t mark things up just because it’s “wellness.”

And cheers to to something that's simple, supportive, and surprisingly good.
